The term "Berserker” is from Old Norse meaning Bear shirt or Bear skin.   In the right of passage that everything young Viking has to go through is to go through stages of survival, strength and courage and independence to over come situations in the wild, i,e taking a wild animals life for food and their hides. 

When older some who are of mighty strength and stature become Berserkers- they were known for their frenzied and fearless behaviour in battle. 

These warriors would enter a state of uncontrollable rage, often attributed to a combination of battle frenzy, adrenaline, and possibly the consumption of certain substances.
